The Victoria Cross (VC) is the highest and most prestigious award of the British honours system. It is awarded for valour "in the presence of the enemy" to members of the British Armed Forces. There have been only three awards of the VC and Bar; two of these are to medical officers (Martin-Leake and Chavasse). The Museum of Military Medicine holds 21 of the 39 medals awarded to medical staff, including Martin-Leake's. Chavasse's medals are in the Lord Ashcroft collection.
